Hey, y’all! It’s finally fall again! My favorite season of all. I think I love everything about fall although Covid19 has put somewhat of a damper on it because we decided to forego our fall vacation. But, I always have to create some new fun things in fall and I loved creating these Fall Counting Mats 0 – 20 along with worksheets for them. The cute scarecrow and fall graphics my sweet sister Carol did and I already have another idea for a digital product for them as well. (Carol died from cancer last Jan, so it’s always bittersweet working with her graphics)
Fall Counting Mats 0 – 20 and Worksheets
Math work mats are great for giving students defined work spaces to work. They give your students that extra little “wiggle room” that they don’t get when doing traditional paper/pencil activities. And when you use seasonal activities like these cute fall counting mats, along with some fall counters, like pumpkins or candy corn, students will be actively engaged in their work learning to count and create groups/sets 0 through 20.
If you have problems with your students playing with the materials instead of working, try giving them time to “interact” with them (not “play”) before using them for work. Then talk to them about using them, not as toys or for playing, but as tools for getting their work done. And if you’re using candy, such as pumpkins or candy corn, tell them the candy is super old and gross. That it’s been used by other students and they surely wouldn’t want to eat it. Tell them that when all work is finished, everyone that didn’t eat the gross candy will get some new candy to try. This will be enough incentive to appease most of your students. You may still have one or two that eat your manipulatives, but if they do, that was their share.
The fall counting mats and worksheets make wonderful activities for Centers or Stations, small group, independent work, whole group, early finishers, morning work, new or struggling learners or special education classrooms. Worksheets can be put into page protectors and used with erasable markers for repeated use. They can also be used as assessments.
When I’m creating worksheets, I have to create all kinds because my student levels vary. One may be working on counting sets to 5 and the others counting sets to 10 or 15. And I always want to have room to grow. If we’re at 5 now, I want to have what’s coming next … not just assume that we’re going to be stuck there. And then of course you’ll want to reuse the activity next year and that’s a whole new ball game!
