Today I’m going to share Monthly Writing Activities for First Grade and Kindergarten with daily writing prompts to keep your students engaged and plugged into writing. If you’ve read my other blog posts, or pretty much anything I write about writing, you know I always say that kindergarten and first grade students need to write daily to become successful writers. So, today I’m excited to share my first two products in a new product line that gives you daily writing prompts for the whole month!
If you want to read my past blog post on the step-by-step process of how I use these writing activities, click here.
Draw. Color. Write. Monthly Writing Activities for First Grade and Kindergarten
This new product line will consist of 12 products: one set of writing activities for each month, consisting of 25 writing prompts specifically for that month. That will be more than enough writing prompts for the month and should give some choice in which ones you choose to use.
The writing activities will be Draw, Color, and Write which gives students some sense of ownership of what they’re writing about by allowing them to add their own illustrations to the drawing. Giving them an illustration to start with scaffolds those students who have difficulty with the drawing process and allows them to add in small details of their own, allowing them to feel successful without getting hung up on the drawing process.
Monthly prompts will consist of holidays, themes, fun days, etc. specific to that month along with a coordinating Fairy Tale for the month.
Each monthly writing activity product will also contain a blank writing calendar for that month with fun days listed at the bottom that you might want to incorporate into your lesson plans. Writing activities will also be included for those days. You can use this writing calendar to plan out your writing activities for the whole month and then be able to see them at a glance. You’ll have everything for the month at your fingertips!
For example, Sept. 12th is Popcorn Day. Why not pop some popcorn, do some fun activities, and then write using the writing activity page?!? 😊 Fun! You will certainly have your students excited and engaged! I’ve even included the popcorn writing activity page and the September Writing Calendar below for you to download and try for FREE.
And here’s some popcorn activities you might want to use:
- Put some popcorn kernels in a small clear jar and have students estimate how many kernels are in the jar.
- Line up popcorn for nonstandard measurement
- Use popcorn for math counters
- Use popping corn for lesson on 5 senses: taste, smell, hear, see, touch
- String popcorn for fine motor skills
- Read The Popcorn Book by Tomie de Paola
- Read Popcorn by Frank Asch
- Write sight words on popcorn shapes printed onto paper. If student can read the word they get to keep the word. At the end, have students wad up all their words and have a popcorn fight. (Be sure to give explicit rules before beginning on what will be allowed and not allowed to keep things safe.) PS – I added a FREEBIE for this into the download below. 🙂
