Y’all, my kindergarten teacher friend, Shrya, wanted some ocean math mats to go with some new Under the Sea Counters that she’d gotten. It took me a minute to figure out what I could possibly do, then decided that I could use some of the graphics from Bryn’s Swim emergent reader that we’d done in the past. Finally, I asked Carol to change up some of the graphics and between the two of us we came up with these too cute Ocean Math Mats 0 – 20!
Because the counters come in two sizes, and she has the larger size, I created two sizes of mats for the numbers 11 – 20. Therefore, I created both larger and smaller mats to make sure there would be enough room for the students to work, but smaller mats in case the teacher had smaller counters and wanted smaller mats to save on paper/ink and room. So you have a choice on the mats you choose for numbers 11 – 20.
Mats should be printed on cardstock, laminated and cut out for durability. You can even use the cover page for your label for your storage envelope/file.
Math work mats are great for giving students defined work spaces to work in. They make wonderful activities for Centers/Stations, small group or independent work. They give your students that extra little “wiggle room” that they don’t get when doing the traditional paper pencil activities.
If you’re doing an Ocean Unit and want some more Ocean ideas, you might want to check out my Ocean Alive page at The Virtual Vine. It hasn’t been updated in years, but you might still find some things there that you can use, because as I’m finding out here lately … things online are a lot of what’s been around for years .. it’s just being restyled and rehashed. Sometimes I can’t believe what I’m seeing! 😀
And here’s an Aqua Fish classroom décor set we did that I love!
